Package Design

Package Design, what is it?

Package design or package labeling is the art of creating a distinctive protective closing design or label for a product once distributed into storage or the retail sector.

  • Packages come in all shapes and sizes from soda cans, pharmaceutical products, to chocolate wrappers and ice packs. The shapes and materials used are endless and therefore the designs for these packages have to differ just as much.
  • Package design generally have the products brand name as the focal point together with brief details on its purpose, directions for use and its contents, coupled with the chosen colour scheme.
  • Product package designs may also contain the nationally and internationally standardized symbols or trademarks such as the recycling, resin identification and environmental green dot symbols

Bar codes for retail store automated scanning as well universal product codes and country of origin are often used

How does a well designed package help my product?

As with all other product related design, the design needs to lend itself to its target market and what its purpose or use is. Ice packs could make use of colour referencing. A package colour such as blue installs the feeling of coldness into one’s mind, where as a chocolate or sweet wrapper is bold and vibrant to attract attention especially that of children who intern ask their parents to purchase the item.

  • Clever marketing strategy via simple colour and design layout.

Other design strategies when conceptualizing the look of your package design could be that of yogurt for example. Many brands have gone for the similar look of being bright and very colorful; this could actually make your product get lost on the shelves next to others that are also very bright. So to make your product stand out amongst the sea of competitive products, your design needs to be different, possibly of cleaner, more elegant look, which as an added bonus can also give off the assumption that it is of a higher quality and that you can actually charge more for it.
